GTI, Jetta, Tiguan or Atlas — different engines underneath

Volkswagen shares engines across its range, but not every VW has the same one. The GTI and Tiguan use the EA888 2.0T, where the plastic water pump and thermostat housing and the PCV valve are frequent visitors to our bay. Many recent Jettas use a smaller EA211 1.4 or 1.5 turbo, which drives its camshafts with a belt rather than a chain — so its service schedule has different items on it. The Atlas offers the VR6 3.6, a naturally aspirated six with its own long timing chain and cooling layout. We check which engine is in the car before talking about what it needs.

On the EA888, a failing PCV valve is a common cause of a whistle from the engine, a rough idle and lean fuel-trim codes, and it is a modest repair when caught early. On the water pump and thermostat housing, the giveaway is a pink or white crust on the passenger side of the engine and a reservoir that needs topping up. We confirm the leak with a pressure test before replacing the assembly.

DSG: wet clutch or dry clutch

A VW with DSG may have a wet-clutch unit, which runs in fluid that needs changing on schedule, or a dry-clutch 7-speed on some smaller cars, which behaves differently and is serviced differently. The wet units are the ones where a missed fluid service shows up as rough shifts and shudder. 4Motion and the Haldex coupling

Tiguan, Atlas, Golf R and other 4Motion VWs drive the rear wheels through a Haldex coupling with its own fluid and pump. Old fluid or a failed pump quietly turns an all-wheel-drive VW into a front-wheel-drive one, which you discover on the first snowy hill in Worcester — often with no warning light at all. A coupling fluid service and a pump check are cheap compared with the alternative, and we test the system with ODIS rather than assuming.

Mismatched tires matter here too: a coupling that constantly sees different front and rear wheel speeds works harder than it should. Keep all four tires the same size and similarly worn, and have the alignment checked after a hard pothole hit.
