Outcome
The Passat left with a new cabin air filter and a disinfected HVAC system, so the air coming out of the vents is going through a clean filter again. The work carries our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on new parts, whichever comes first.
The cabin air filter is the part nobody sees. On this 2022 Volkswagen Passat it lives in the HVAC housing behind the glovebox, and every bit of air that comes out of the vents — fresh air or recirculated — goes through it first. The car came in for a cabin air filter replacement and an HVAC disinfection, and the old filter showed exactly why both are worth doing.
What came out
The old filter half out of its housing. Leaves, seed husks and dirt packed into the pleats — and some of it on the carpet as it came out.
The pleats were packed with leaves, seed husks and fine dirt along the whole length of the filter. That is what a cabin filter is for — catching it before it reaches you — but a filter this full does its job worse every week: airflow drops, the blower works harder for the same air, and the debris sitting in a damp, dark housing is where musty smells start.

Cabin air filter — the old one removed and a new one fitted.
HVAC disinfection — the system treated to clean out the bacteria and mold that grow on the evaporator and in the ducts, the usual source of a musty smell from the vents.
