Suspension & Steering Repair

A quiet, straight, planted car again — after the potholes have had their turn.

Worcester’s potholes and frost heaves are hard on suspension and steering parts, and the damage rarely announces itself clearly. A clunk over bumps, a car that pulls or wanders, a steering wheel that sits off-center, or tires wearing on one edge can each come from a different worn part. We put the car on the lift, load each joint and bushing, and show you which part is actually worn before quoting it — then align the car on the new parts. Hit something hard? See what a pothole can damage.

Backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on new parts.

What’s included

Everything this service covers

Noise diagnosis

Clunks, knocks, creaks and rattles traced on the lift and on a road test, so the right part gets replaced.

Shocks & struts

Leaking or worn shocks and struts replaced in pairs, with mounts and springs checked at the same time.

Control arms & bushings

Worn bushings and control arms that cause clunks, wander and uneven tire wear.

Tie rods & ball joints

Loose steering joints found under load, and bent tie rods replaced before an alignment rather than aligned around.

Air suspension

Leaking air springs and lines, compressors and ride-height faults on European SUVs and luxury cars.

Alignment after repair

Every steering or suspension repair finished with a four-wheel alignment on the new parts.

What the symptoms usually point to

A clunk over bumps is usually a worn sway-bar link, control-arm bushing or strut mount. A pull to one side can be alignment, a sticking brake caliper or a tire problem. A wandering, vague feel at highway speed points to worn tie rods, ball joints or bushings. A bouncy, floaty ride or a nose that dives under braking means tired shocks or struts. A steering wheel that is off-center after a pothole often means a bent part, not just an alignment that has slipped.

Those are starting points, not diagnoses. Several worn parts can make the same noise, which is why we load each joint on the lift rather than replacing the most likely suspect.

Why we inspect before every alignment

An alignment sets the angles of the wheels using the steering and suspension parts that are on the car. If a tie rod is bent or a bushing is worn, the alignment printout can still read in spec while the car drives wrong and wears tires. We have documented exactly that on a Maserati Levante that came in for an alignment only: both outer tie rod ends were bent, so they were replaced first and the car was aligned on the new parts.

Pothole damage and Massachusetts winters

Salt and potholes work together here. Salt corrodes ball joints, sway-bar links and coil springs, and potholes deliver the impact that finally breaks them. Spring is the busiest time for suspension work for that reason. If you hit something hard enough to wince, have the car checked: a bent part caught early is one part, while a bent part driven on for months also takes a set of tires with it. Our guide to pothole damage covers what to look for.

Air suspension, EVs and heavy SUVs

Air suspension on Range Rover, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Maserati SUVs fails differently: a corner that sits low after the car is parked, a compressor that runs too often, or a suspension warning on the dash. We leak-test the system and find the failed spring, line, valve or sensor before quoting one. Teslas and other EVs are heavy and wear front control arms and bushings faster than a gas car of the same size. See Tesla service.

FAQ

Good to know

What causes a clunking noise over bumps?

Most often a worn sway-bar link, control-arm bushing, ball joint or strut mount. Several of these make a similar noise, so we find it on the lift by loading each joint, rather than replacing the usual suspect and hoping.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

After anything that changes the steering or suspension geometry — tie rods, control arms, struts — yes. We finish those repairs with a four-wheel alignment on the new parts, so the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly.

How do I know if my shocks or struts are worn?

A bouncy ride, the nose diving under braking, the car leaning hard in corners, fluid on the shock body, or cupped patches worn into the tires are the usual signs. We inspect them on the lift and replace them in pairs on the same axle.

My car pulls to one side — is that alignment?

It can be, but a sticking brake caliper, a worn suspension part or a tire problem can cause the same pull. We check all three before recommending an alignment, so you are not paying for one that won’t fix it.

Do you repair air suspension?

Yes — air springs, lines, compressors, valve blocks and ride-height sensors on European SUVs and luxury cars. We leak-test to find which part has actually failed before quoting.

How much does suspension repair cost?

It depends on the part and the car. Labor is $199/hr, and you get a written quote, with the worn parts shown to you, before any work starts.
