Two different vehicles share the Discovery name, and it matters which one you have. The Discovery is the full-size, seven-seat model with the Range Rover’s longitudinal engines, ZF 8-speed and, on most versions, air suspension. The Discovery Sport is smaller, with a transverse four-cylinder, a ZF 9-speed and conventional steel springs. What we see — and fix — most
The 9-speed transverse automatic can shift roughly or hesitate, particularly at low speed. Fluid condition, software level and adaptations are checked before anyone talks about a new gearbox.
On air-sprung Discoveries: leaking springs, compressor wear and height-sensor faults, found to the failed part.
Plastic coolant pipes, thermostat housings and water pumps on both models. Caught early, a coolant leak is a small repair; ignored, it becomes an overheat.
The diesel Discovery uses diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and a particulate filter. Warnings about either need diagnosing, not resetting — and short-trip driving makes filter problems more likely.
Low battery voltage causes a spread of unrelated warnings on both models. Battery and charging tested first, then every module scanned.
Pads and rotors to specification, with the electronic parking brake retracted in service mode — not forced.

What is the difference between the Discovery and the Discovery Sport?
They are different vehicles. The Discovery is the full-size seven-seater with longitudinal six-cylinder or four-cylinder engines, a ZF 8-speed and usually air suspension. The Discovery Sport is smaller, with a transverse 2.0 turbo four, a ZF 9-speed and steel springs. Parts, fluids and common faults differ, so it matters which one is on the work order.
Why does my Discovery Sport shift roughly?
Common causes on the 9-speed are old fluid, outdated transmission software, or adaptations that need resetting — all far cheaper than a gearbox. It should be road-tested and scanned before any major repair is quoted.
Why is my diesel Discovery showing an emissions warning?
On the Td6 the usual sources are the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system or the particulate filter, which needs regular highway driving to clean itself. The warning needs diagnosing properly — ignoring it can lead to the vehicle limiting power or restricting restarts.
