Maserati Ghibli Check Engine Light: A Failed PCV Valve, Coated in Sludge

A Maserati Ghibli came in with the check engine light on. The cause was the PCV valve — the small diaphragm valve that controls crankcase ventilation. With its cover off, the inside was coated in oily, yellowish residue and the valve had failed. A new PCV valve fixed it. Here is what it looked like and why such a small part turns the light on.

Outcome

The failed PCV valve on the Ghibli was replaced. The work carries our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on new parts, whichever comes first.

This Maserati Ghibli was driven in with one complaint: the check engine light was on. A check engine light is a starting point, not a diagnosis — the same light covers everything from a loose gas cap to a misfire — so the first step was to scan the engine control unit and follow the data. It led to a small part on top of the engine: the PCV valve.

What a PCV valve does

Every engine lets a little combustion gas slip past the piston rings into the crankcase. The positive crankcase ventilation system draws those gases and oil vapor back into the intake to be burned, instead of venting them to the air or letting pressure build in the engine. The PCV valve controls that flow with a spring-loaded diaphragm. When the diaphragm fails, the engine draws air it is not measuring, or crankcase pressure goes wrong — and the engine control unit sees the mixture or pressure it expects drift out of range and turns the light on.

What we found

The PCV valve cover in hand, coated in oily, yellowish residue, and the open housing with its spring still on the engine.

With the cover off, the inside of the valve was coated in oily, yellowish residue — oil vapor mixed with moisture from the crankcase, the kind of buildup the valve sees over years of short trips and cold starts. The valve had failed. We replaced the PCV valve.

What to take from this

A check engine light on a Maserati does not automatically mean an expensive repair. Sometimes it is a small, inexpensive part like this one — but only a proper scan tells you which. We diagnose and service the Ghibli at our Worcester shop; more on our Maserati Ghibli page, our Maserati service page, and our electrical and engine diagnostics.

FAQ

Questions this job raises

Can a bad PCV valve turn on the check engine light on a Maserati Ghibli?

Yes. On this Ghibli the check engine light was caused by a failed PCV valve. A failed valve lets in air the engine is not measuring or upsets crankcase pressure, and the engine control unit flags it.

What does a PCV valve do?

It controls the flow of crankcase gases and oil vapor back into the intake so they are burned in the engine, instead of building pressure in the crankcase.

Why was there yellow sludge in the PCV valve?

Oil vapor from the crankcase mixed with moisture. It builds up over time, especially with short trips and cold starts that never let the engine fully warm up.

Is it safe to drive with a bad PCV valve?

Short-term, usually, if the check engine light is steady rather than flashing. Long-term it can make the engine run lean and push oil past seals, so it is worth fixing promptly.
