Car Key & Fob Programming

A spare key or a working one again — without the dealer wait.

A modern car key is a small computer: the car has to recognize its code before the engine will start, so a new key or fob only works once it has been programmed to the car. We program spare and replacement keys and fobs, diagnose immobilizer faults and “key not detected” warnings, and handle the module work that some key problems turn out to be. Call with the year, make and model and we’ll tell you what your car needs before you book. For the deep end of immobilizer work, see how we got an Audi R8 with a locked-out immobilizer starting again.

Backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on new parts.

What’s included

Everything this service covers

Spare keys & fobs

An extra key programmed while you still have a working one — the cheapest time to do it.

Replacement keys

A lost or broken key replaced and programmed to the car, with the old one removed from its memory where the car allows.

Smart & proximity keys

Keyless-entry and push-button-start fobs, including European and luxury makes.

Immobilizer faults

Cranks but won’t start, a flashing security light, or a SAFE / anti-theft message diagnosed at the source.

“Key not detected” warnings

Fob batteries, antennas and receivers tested before anything is replaced.

Module replacement coding

When the fault is in an immobilizer, body or engine module, the new module coded to your VIN and keys.

Get a spare before you need one

Adding a key while you still have a working one is straightforward on most cars. Replacing the only key after it is lost can be a much bigger job, and on some makes it means removing a module or working through the manufacturer’s security process. If you are down to one key, a spare is the cheapest insurance you can buy for the car.

When the car won’t recognize the key

If the car cranks but won’t start, the security light flashes, or the dash says the key isn’t detected, start with the simple things: a weak fob battery is the most common cause, and many cars let you start with a dead fob held against a marked spot on the steering column or console. If a fresh battery doesn’t fix it, the fault can be the key itself, the antenna or receiver that reads it, or the immobilizer data in a module. We test those in order rather than selling a new key first.

A weak 12-volt battery causes immobilizer and “key not detected” messages too — see battery, alternator & starter repair.

European, luxury and older cars

Keys on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Volvo and other European cars are tied closely to the car’s modules, and some makes only allow keys to be added through the manufacturer’s own security system. We run the factory software for those makes (see our ECU programming) and will tell you honestly when a key has to come from the dealer. Older cars with a separate immobilizer box or a failed module are often where an independent shop saves the most, because the alternative is replacing modules the car doesn’t need.

FAQ

Good to know

Can you program a key I bought online?

Sometimes. Many keys sold online are the wrong frequency, chip or part number for the car, or are used keys locked to another vehicle. Call us with the part number before you buy, or let us source the key, so you don’t pay for one that can’t be programmed.

I lost my only key — can you help?

Often yes, but it is a bigger job than adding a spare, and on some makes a lost-all-keys situation has to go through the manufacturer. Call with the year, make and model and we’ll tell you what is possible before you have the car towed in.

Why does my car say “key not detected”?

Most often a weak fob battery. If a new battery doesn’t fix it, the antenna or receiver that reads the key, interference, or a weak 12-volt car battery can cause it. We test those before replacing a key.

Is it cheaper than the dealer?

Usually, especially when the fault turns out to be a module or wiring rather than the key. Where a key genuinely has to come from the dealer, we’ll tell you up front.

How long does key programming take?

Adding a key to a car that already has a working one is usually quick once the correct key is in hand. Lost-key and module jobs take longer, and we’ll give you the timeline when we quote.
