BMW X5 xDrive40e Hybrid Battery Failure: Confirmed Online, Replaced and Programmed

A 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid with a hybrid system fault. An online vehicle diagnostic confirmed the high-voltage battery had failed. We replaced the HV battery under the cargo floor and programmed the vehicle order so the car accepts it. Here is the job.

How it arrived

Brought in with a hybrid system fault.

Reported symptoms

  • Hybrid system fault

Outcome

The failed high-voltage battery in the X5 xDrive40e was replaced and the vehicle order programmed so the car accepts it. The work carries our 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on new parts, whichever comes first.

This 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e is a plug-in hybrid: a 2.0-liter turbo engine, an electric motor in the transmission, and a high-voltage battery under the cargo floor. It came in with a hybrid system fault.

Confirming the failure first

A hybrid battery is the most expensive part in the car, so it is the last thing anyone should replace on a guess. We ran an online vehicle diagnostic, which reads the high-voltage system in depth, and it confirmed the hybrid battery had failed. With that confirmed, the battery was replaced.

Replacing the HV battery

The X5 xDrive40e’s battery lives under the cargo floor. Before anything else, the high-voltage system is made safe — switched off, de-energized and verified with the right meter before a single connector is touched. Then the cargo area is stripped, the orange high-voltage connectors are disconnected, and the pack is unbolted and lifted out.

Programming the vehicle order

On a BMW, bolting in a new battery is only half the job. The car’s modules need to know what is fitted, so we programmed the vehicle order — the record of the car’s configuration — so the car recognizes and accepts the replacement battery. Without that step a new battery can sit in the car and still not be accepted.

What to take from this

A hybrid warning does not always mean the battery — but when the battery has failed, the diagnosis should prove it before anything is replaced. If you own a BMW plug-in hybrid out of warranty, an independent shop that does high-voltage work can save you a trip to the dealer. More on our BMW service page and module programming.
